Parish Family Picnic and BBQ

Sunday 1 June 2002

50 Parishioners and friends travelled either by bus or car to Tollymore Forest Park in Newcastle (Co. Down) on Sunday after the 10.00 am All-Age Worship Service which included the annual Sunday School Prize-giving.

We had a field on site all to ourselves and upon arrival a marquee was put up - to keep the sun off the food, naturally! We decided to have our picnic then to keep up the energy levels of the tinies and some of the not-so-tinies!

This was followed by some community games - egg and spoon, sack races, running the mummy (i.e. racing with a toilet-roll wrapped person!) - you name it we had it, it was all good clean fun! Well apart from one or two muddy bits!

After the games we all set off on a sleuths trail round the Arboretum, we had leaves to collect, types of trees to identify, heights of mountains to find along with other information. It was great - the children had fun and got exhausted at the same time and the older participants - well they were much the same!

We all arrived back to base camp with a good appetite and ready to eat. Salads, burgers, hot-dogs and the essential sauces were all heartily munched while the prizes were distributed to all who managed to complete the trail.

It seemed like no time at all when the bus was ready to take us home. Time really does fly when you are having fun! My son had no sooner arrived home when he wanted to know 'Can we go on another barber-que the morrow mummy?' So if you were unable to come you missed a great day but we might try it again next year. Weather permitting! Thanks to all the team involved in helping to organise the day and thanks to Charlie from Ulsterbus for taking us.
